Sanjaya might just be the luckiest man in the world. Through the combined power of Howard Stern and the text messaging might of a million little girls, he not only survived the hatchet on American Idol for another week, but he’s not even in the bottom three! Most people attribute his success to the way he changes completely for each new week of the competition. But what if this was a dating site and Sanjaya was looking for romance instead of a record deal?
I hate to mix my reality show metaphors, but to steal a phrase… He’d have been voted off the island a long time ago. It is one thing to show that you’re versatile, but if you go in too many directions, no one will ever have the chance to figure you out. With the other contestants you can see who they are by how they act and what they sing. You’ve got the Rocker, the Soulful R&B singer, the Justin Timberlake wannabe, the sexpot and others. Sanjaya on the other hand changes styles faster than Angelina can adopt kids. That just makes him a novelty… Novelties have no staying power, not in the music industry and not in the dating world.
Online dating is not an instant fix for being single. Some people find a date on the first day out, others are members for months before they find someone worth hiding their profile for. For those people, it’s good to freshen up your profile from time to time with new info and insight into who you are, but don’t make dramatic changes for the purpose of writing what you think people want to read. You need to you write about who you are. That’s the only way people will really know if you are the type of person they are looking for. Big changes that aren’t true to yourself will attract all the wrong people and even worse… drive off the right ones.
On American Idol, the judges already have a winner picked in their minds, Most of America does as well. For now Sanjaya’s safe, but when it gets down to the top five and he’s surrounded by talented singers with strong identities he’ll find himself off the show and recording a holiday album with William Hung.
